xTool xTool D1 Pro · our pick for most first-time buyers

What a diode laser does

Engrave almost anything. Cut wood, MDF and dark acrylic.

One machine, one desk, a dozen product lines — coasters, tumblers, signs, leather patches, ornaments. Here is where a blue diode shines and where it stops.

Wood & plywood

Engrave any wood; cut 3–10 mm plywood depending on module power.

Plywood settings →

Slate, leather, cork

Crisp photo-grade engraving at modest power. Coasters and patches are the classic first products.

Slate settings →

Tumblers & coated metal

Strip powder coat or anodizing to bare metal. Needs a rotary for cups.

What it won't do

Clear acrylic, glass without coating, and bare metal. That's CO2 or fiber territory.

Settings charts

Power, speed, passes — per machine, per material

Generic "wood: 50% / 3000 mm/min" tables are useless because a 5 W Sculpfun and a 40 W xTool are different tools. Our charts are keyed to the exact module.

Four accessories that matter more than the fifth watt

Air assist and a honeycomb bed change cut quality more than a power bump. A rotary opens tumblers. Goggles are not optional.

Frequently asked questions

What can a diode laser engraver actually do?
A 5–40 W blue diode (445–455 nm) engraves wood, leather, slate, cork, anodized aluminium and painted or powder-coated metal, and cuts plywood, MDF and dark acrylic up to roughly 10–15 mm depending on power. It will not cut clear acrylic or bare metal — that needs CO2 or fiber.
Open frame or enclosed?
Open-frame machines (xTool D1 Pro, Atomstack, Sculpfun) give the most work area per dollar but need goggles and good ventilation. Enclosed machines (xTool S1, M2) are Class 1 — safer around kids and pets, and a fume extractor hooks straight on.
Do I need LightBurn?
Not on day one; every brand ships free software. Most hobbyists move to LightBurn within a few months for better control over layers, test grids and camera alignment. All machines listed here are LightBurn-compatible.
How do you make money?
Through affiliate links. If you buy via a link we may earn a commission; the price you pay is the same. We never show prices or stock here — those are live on the retailer's page.
